Discover the Power of Probiotics with Our Novi Chiropractor at StayWell Chiropractic

Probiotics are live bacteria that are critical for your health, more specifically your immune system and digestive tract. These bacteria are absolutely necessary to protect you from harmful virus, bacteria, yeast, fungus and parasitic invasion. Antibiotics, diets high in sugar and illness can all cause existing “good” bacteria to die off. When this happens, you are much more likely to see uncomfortable digestive issues, such as: gas, bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea.

People suffering with overgrowth of “bad bacteria” are commonly diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and likely notice fatigue, trouble sleeping, heightened emotions, and even frequent sinus infections. There are many different strains of probiotics available so let’s talk about how to choose the right one for you.

Probiotics is Good Bacteria

It is important to remember that probiotics are LIVE bacteria and can be destroyed if not taken care of properly. When looking for a probiotic, keep in mind how they have been stored and shipped, as heat above 1050 will kill the live bacteria rendering it useless. If you are currently taking a probiotic and find that it is not helping this may be the reason why. Also consider the different strains of bacteria, not all of them work the same:

  • L. acidophilus & Bifidobacterium: “good” bacteria, designed to protect your gut lining and decrease abdominal discomfort, cramping, bloating, gas, constipation and diarrhea.

  • L. plantorum: supports nasal, sinus and respiratory health, along with intestinal irritation to support a healthy immune system

  • S. boulardii: supports immune health and provides relief of traveler’s abdominal stress.

  • L. rhamnosus: maintains healthy urinary and vaginal health.

Not Sure Which Probiotic is Right for You? Ask Our Chiropractor of the Surrounding Communities of Novi, Farmington Hills, Livonia, and Northville

Ok, so now you know what strain, or type, of probiotic to look for, but what brand do you buy?? Probiotics found in drug stores may benefit you but may also be ineffective if packaged and shipped improperly. Consider ordering a probiotic from a reliable source who offers refrigerated shipping. Metagenics’ UltraFlora line carries many different probiotics that provide different benefits. UltraFlora IB is a strong probiotic with 60 billion live organisms, which is great for people who experience constant discomfort from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, while UltraFlora Spectrum has 30 billion live organisms and is a great every day probiotic for overall digestive and uro-genital health.

If you are still unsure, you are not alone! Write down your symptoms and ask our chiropractor for help finding the right probiotic for you. Simple steps can improve the way you feel. Today is the day to take those steps to improve your health and StayWell.
