Learn How to Purify the Air in Your Home the “Green” Way: Incredible Houseplants with Our Novi, MI Chiropractor at StayWell Chiropractic

Spring is right around the corner and while you may be anticipating outdoor allergies, indoor allergies can affect you just the same. Mold, dust and formaldehyde are just a few of the main culprits of indoor allergies and getting rid of them can be very hard. Mold loves moisture and can be difficult to prevent, it can grow on walls, floors, appliances, carpet and furniture. Keeping areas that build moisture dry is helpful but some items in the home are not as easy to clean or replace.

Other chemicals can also fill the air and effect allergies such as formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is emitted from various products, it can be found in hardwood, particle board, paints, wallpaper, cardboard, fireplaces and even lotions and shampoos. It is a chemical that is difficult to avoid but looking at ingredients can reduce the amount emitted in your home.

Dust builds up in the home from hair, animal fur, skin cells and fibers in furniture and carpet. Vacuuming and dusting may help reduce particles in the air but it is not efficient at keeping it away.

Various tips and tricks can help reduce allergens in the home such as an air purifier but there are also other surprising ways to reduce the mold, dust and formaldehyde that gather in the home.

Plants Can Also Reduce Allergens in the Homes of Novi, Farmington Hills, Livonia, and Northville

Plants offer us various uses, such as oxygen, pleasant aromas, beautiful scenery and decoration, but did you know there are plants that can also reduce the allergens in your home?

Some plants may have you sneezing and itching your eyes when exposed to them so before going out and buying the plants we will discuss, make sure you do not have an allergy to them.

  • English Ivy: Reduces the concentration of chemicals and bacteria in the air as well as the concentration of airborne mold spores by as much as 60 Percent according to Dr. Bill Wolverton, a former research scientist from NASA. English Ivy does best in a partially shady area and should be hung so that it grows downward.
  • Janet Craig: Dracaena species efficient in removing formaldehyde from indoor spaces, but also filters and removes mold spores in the air. According to Dr. Wolverton, mold spores were reduced by as much as 55 percent.
  • Dracaena: Varying species of this plant grab allergens from the air and hold them in its leaves.
  • Boston Ferns: Decorative and highly efficient at purifying the air by reducing formaldehyde and mold spores inside.
  • Spider plants: Exceptional at eliminating formaldehyde.
  • Lady Palm and Bamboo Palm: Excellent general air cleaners.

These are just a few examples of plants that can reduce allergens in the home and keep the air your family is breathing clean and pure.
